The 44-year-old official has been appointed by the Turkish Football Federation for the crucial match at the top of the league this coming Monday, following requests from both teams, as reported by ESPN.
This choice to utilize the referee who oversaw last season’s Champions League final comes in the wake of multiple controversies in Turkish football over the last year and a half.
Earlier this month, the Turkish club Adana Demirspor left the field during their game against Galatasaray in protest of a penalty given against them.
The league faced a suspension in December 2023 after the president of MKE Ankaragücü, Faruk Koca, punched a referee on the field following his team conceding a last-minute equalizer.
Fenerbahce is currently six points behind league leaders Galatasaray as they prepare for Monday’s match at 17:00 GMT.
Fenerbahce’s head coach, Jose Mourinho, has expressed his approval of this decision, having previously spoken about the environment in the country being "toxic."
“I believe it’s essential for the credibility and the image of the match,” Mourinho stated.
“If it’s a top referee, specifically a top European referee, I am pleased with that because, like everyone else, I enjoy winning, but I am also someone who values fair play.”
