Peterborough Chairman Darragh MacAnthony Denies Forest Green Allegations Over Robbie Savage Approach

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has firmly denied accusations made by Forest Green Rovers owner Dale Vince alleging that the League One club made an illegal approach for manager Robbie Savage. The dispute arose following Savage's appointment at Peterborough on October 2, after the departure of former manager Luke Williams.

Speaking to Radio Gloucestershire, Vince claimed that he initially refused Peterborough permission to speak with the 51-year-old manager. According to the Forest Green owner, he was ultimately forced to sanction the move after the League One side allegedly bypassed the club to approach Savage directly. Vince asserted that Peterborough covered themselves in no glory during the negotiations, stating that after being denied formal permission, they spoke to the manager anyway before Savage returned to inform the club of the interest.

Vince further detailed the difficult circumstances surrounding the departure, noting that Savage is a personal friend and had expressed an intense personal need to leave. He explained that it was very hard to say no under the emotional strain, initially telling the manager to go and talk to them. Describing the breakdown of the talks, Vince alleged that Peterborough showed no respect to Savage's position during negotiations, verbally offering him the job before reportedly denying it and threatening to move on to a secondary choice, which left the manager in a difficult situation.

Despite these claims, MacAnthony defended the integrity of the process on social media platform X. The Peterborough chairman insisted that the recruitment procedure to appoint their new manager was entirely correct, proper, and compliant with all relevant regulations. Having served as an EFL club owner for 20 years, MacAnthony maintained that he holds profound respect for the proper operational processes and concluded his response by wishing Forest Green well in their search for a replacement manager.

Forest Green Rovers have not yet confirmed whether they have officially contacted the Football Association regarding the dispute. Meanwhile, following a successful 3-1 victory away against Leicester City, Peterborough United prepare to host Burton Albion over the weekend for Robbie Savage's first home league match in charge of the team.
