Ferguson's coaching career to date includes serving as assistant manager at Everton under renowned managers Carlo Ancelotti and Rafael Benitez, alongside two spells as caretaker boss. He also worked under Roberto Martinez and Ronald Koeman at Everton, and in recent years, he has managed Forest Green Rovers and Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
His surprise appointment follows the departure of Declan Devine as manager of the Irish League outfit in September. Furthermore, his former Dundee United teammate Gary Bollan, with whom he worked at Inverness, has been named as assistant manager. Glentoran have not secured a league title since 2009 despite significant financial investment from owner Ali Pour and the adoption of a full-time professional model in recent years.
"I am delighted to become manager of Glentoran," stated Ferguson, whose first fixture in charge will be at home against Ballymena United on Saturday at 15:00 BST. He noted that the organization is a major club with a tremendous history representing a great opportunity, adding that he understands the responsibility that comes with the role.
"I want to win trophies here. Glentoran should be challenging for the title and every cup and shield we enter. I know that success here will be judged on what we win," Ferguson added. He explained that the more he spoke with Ali Pour and sporting director Paul Millar, the more he wanted the position because their ambition matches his own, leaving him eager to get onto the training pitch, work with the players, and see what they can achieve together.
Ferguson emphasized that he has signed for the long term and wants to get to know the people at the club and within the wider community to become part of local life. He mentioned hearing a great deal about the Glentoran supporters and what the club means to them, acknowledging a responsibility to win matches and make them proud while noting that support must be earned.
Glens owner Pour stated that Ferguson's appointment reflects the club's ambition to secure silverware. "We took the time this decision deserved. We conducted a rigorous recruitment process, interviewing candidates from across the United Kingdom, Ireland and Scandinavia," Pour explained, adding that they carefully assessed experience and proposals while completing due diligence before making the choice.
Pour and Millar met Ferguson on several occasions in Liverpool, which provided an opportunity to explore his management approach, discuss role demands, and understand his potential contributions. His football knowledge, experience, and determination to embrace the opportunity impressed the leadership, with Pour highlighting his qualities across coaching, leadership, player development, and recruitment, backed by strong game relationships.
Former Glentoran captain Paul Leeman, who made 597 appearances for the club, expressed excitement regarding Ferguson's arrival in the Oval dugout. "I still can't believe it - it's a huge appointment and I'm interested to see his plans for Glentoran," Leeman told BBC Radio Ulster. He noted that the hire carries risk given Ferguson's primary reputation as a number two, but emphasized his vast top-level experience and potential to add value, while observing that he will need local assistants since he does not know the league.
Leeman suggested that Ferguson is moving to the Irish League to resurrect his managerial career, predicting he will immediately command player respect. Prior to this appointment, the Glens had been linked with former Northern Ireland international Jim Magilton, who ultimately chose to remain with Irish Premiership rivals Cliftonville.
Devine left his position by mutual consent after two and a half years at the helm, having guided the team to a County Antrim Shield success in the 2024-25 season for their first trophy triumph since the 2020 Irish Cup. Ferguson is now tasked with ending the long drought since the club's last league victory seventeen years ago, with Glentoran currently sitting fourth in the Irish Premiership standings after winning five and losing four of their opening eleven league fixtures this season. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/cq62yd157rjeo
