The largest island in the world, which has yet to participate in competitive international football, has a population of 57,000 and is recognized as a sovereign territory of Denmark, though it is geographically situated in North America.
It cannot become a member of Uefa because the governing body for Europe only accepts nations that are acknowledged by the United Nations, but Concacaf, which oversees North and Central America along with the Caribbean, does not impose such a criterion.
Greenland engages in friendlies that are not sanctioned by Fifa, but its aspirations to compete internationally for the first time were thwarted during a meeting in Miami prior to the Gold Cup.
"Following a comprehensive evaluation by the Concacaf administration and Council, and in line with the Concacaf Statutes, the membership application put forth by the Greenlandic Football Association was reviewed by the Member Associations and was unanimously denied," a statement from Concacaf explained.
President Donald Trump has persistently urged the United States to assume control of the territory, sparking backlash in both Denmark and Greenland.
Greenland spans an area larger than western Europe, yet 81% of its terrain is covered in glacial ice.
As per the country's tourism site, Greenland is home to 76 football clubs and has around 5,500 registered players, which represents approximately 10% of its population.
Nonetheless, the severe Arctic climate restricts outdoor football to just five months each year, relegating play to gravel pitches or artificial surfaces.
Last year, Greenland's manager Morten Rutkjaer expressed that gaining membership in Concacaf would significantly aid in the development of their players.
