When does the Premier League begin?
The first day of the 2025-26 season is set for Saturday, 16 August, marking 83 days since the last Premier League match occurred.
In prior seasons, the opening match has sometimes been scheduled for Friday night.
No matter when the inaugural match takes place, an air of hope and anticipation will surround supporters from all 20 clubs as they envision the possibilities the upcoming months hold.
The specific dates and times for individual matches during weekends will be established at regular intervals throughout the season, depending on television selections made by broadcasters.
Overall, the season will feature 33 weekends and five midweek rounds of matches.
The campaign will wrap up with the final set of fixtures on Sunday, 24 May 2026.
Which teams will compete in the Premier League next season?
After finishing in second place for three consecutive seasons, Arsenal will be among the teams looking to unseat Liverpool.
Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City will also be striving to regain their place in the title race following an unusual season without any trophies.
Newcastle and Tottenham both broke their trophy droughts in 2025, and they return to the Champions League along with Chelsea, with all parties hopeful that their squads can handle the demands of competing on several fronts.
This also applies to Europa League qualifiers Aston Villa and Crystal Palace, as well as Nottingham Forest, who are participating in the Conference League.
A disappointing performance in the 2024-25 season means that Manchester United has failed to secure a place in European competitions, leading Ruben Amorim to hope that the additional time spent training will yield positive results.
Having witnessed all three promoted teams relegated last year, the newly promoted trio of Leeds, Burnley, and Sunderland will be striving to prevent a repeat of that outcome.
On the other hand, while Everton has consistently remained in the Premier League throughout its history, this season marks their first at the new Hill Dickinson Stadium, which has a capacity of 52,888, following their departure from Goodison Park in May.
A season between World Cups
This season features an increasingly busy football schedule, framed by two World Cups: the first-ever 32-team Club World Cup set for this summer and the more traditional international tournament in 2026.
As is customary, maintaining player fitness will be essential for managers across the league. With nine Premier League teams engaging in European competitions this year, it will be even more challenging for nearly half of them.
"The season starts on August 16 to maximize the available player rest, providing 83 days off from the conclusion of the 2024-25 season," stated the Premier League.
"The season is scheduled to end on May 24, 2026, ensuring that the Premier League concludes before the FIFA 2026 World Cup call-up period begins."
However, not all clubs can expect those 83 days of rest.
If Manchester City or Chelsea reach the final of the Club World Cup, they could find themselves playing their opening match of the 2025-26 season just 34 days after completing the 2024-25 season.
Fortunately, there will be some relief during the Christmas and New Year period, with the schedule arranged to avoid having two rounds of fixtures within 60 hours of one another, and no matches will be held on Christmas Eve.
