Liverpool's head coach Arne Slot expressed his uncertainty, stating "I am not entirely sure I witnessed a football match" in relation to Newcastle United’s tactics during his team's 3-2 victory at St James' Park.

The match featured a dramatic turn, with 16-year-old forward Rio Ngumoha netting a last-minute winner in a game where Newcastle managed to come back from being two goals down while playing with 10 men.

According to Opta's data, the ball was in play for just 40.8% of the match, marking the lowest figure for a Premier League game since February 2010.

After the game, Slot remarked to Sky Sports, "I am not exactly sure if I observed a football match."

He further noted, "It was a series of set-pieces and long throws, lacking in tactical depth. However, I appreciated how resilient we remained."

The contest unfolded amid Alexander Isak's intentions to move from Newcastle to Liverpool, which heightened the intensity within the stadium.

This tension spilled onto the field, as Newcastle's Anthony Gordon received a red card for a reckless tackle on Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk just before the halftime break.

A total of 32 fouls were committed during the match, the highest in a Premier League fixture this season.

"It was a very challenging first half hour, 45 minutes. We did not falter at all and took the lead at 1-0," Slot said.

He added, "With Newcastle reduced to 10 men, you'd assume that would be advantageous for us; however, when the goalkeeper executes every free-kick, it becomes quite difficult to capitalize on having an extra player. This made it tough to maintain the 2-0 advantage."

Gordon issues apology for red card

England international Gordon has expressed remorse over his sending off, stating that his "intentions were pure."

In a social media post, the 24-year-old shared, "I was merely trying to inject some energy into the game, but I mistimed the tackle."

He also extended an apology to Virgil, saying, "I would never purposely attempt a tackle like that. We spoke afterward, and he understands."

Gordon continued, "More significantly, I take pride in my performance on the field and how we played. The atmosphere you all create is what makes St James' Park exceptional.

"I cherish everything our club represents, especially right now. I will return stronger, just like every other challenge I have encountered."
