Seamus Coleman has been omitted from the Republic of Ireland squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Hungary and Armenia next month.

The 36-year-old defender was sidelined during the June friendlies with Senegal and Luxembourg due to injury but has not been utilized as a substitute in either of Everton's Premier League matches this season.

Even though he has regained his fitness, coach Heimir Hallgrimsson has chosen not to reinstate him into the international lineup as captain.

In contrast, Ipswich Town's Chiedozie Ogbene, who has been absent from international play since October 2024 due to an Achilles tendon injury, is making a return to the 23-player roster.

The 28-year-old joins a contingent of eight forwards that includes his club teammates Sammie Szmodics and Kasey McAteer, along with Evan Ferguson, who recently debuted in Serie A as Roma triumphed 1-0 over Bologna on Saturday.

Robbie Brady of Preston North End and Southampton's Will Smallbone will not be participating due to injury.

Bosun Lawal, an uncapped defender from Stoke City, retains his place in the squad after his initial selection for the draw against Luxembourg.

The Republic of Ireland will meet Hungary in Dublin on September 6, followed by a journey to Armenia three days later.

These matches will kick off the team's qualifying efforts for the 2026 World Cup, with Portugal also included in their group.
