England head coach Thomas Tuchel is eager for his squad to implement long throw-ins and utilize long passes at the upcoming World Cup next summer.
The Three Lions currently lead Group K in the qualifying rounds, having secured four victories from four matches, sitting five points ahead of Serbia, whom they will face on Tuesday.
Tuchel's team has utilized a lower proportion of long balls as a share of their overall passes (4%) during the qualifying phase compared to the 8.8% utilized by Gareth Southgate's England at Euro 2024.
It is important to note that two of the four matches played thus far were against Andorra.
In recent times, the use of long throw-ins has increased within English football.
"I mentioned it before - the long throw-in is making a comeback," Tuchel remarked. "However, our time is limited.
"Nevertheless, as we approach the World Cup, every detail will count, so we will discuss long throw-ins and the significance of long goal kicks in addition to our short passing game."
Tuchel has three more international breaks available to collaborate with the England players prior to the pre-World Cup friendly matches—assuming the Three Lions secure their spot in the tournament.
"Yet, we can't pack everything into four training days. Nonetheless, these aspects will be crucial. We shall see," Tuchel stated.
"I need to reflect on our strategies with my assistant coaches. Those plays are returning, and crosses are becoming prevalent once again."
Tuchel's assistant, Anthony Barry, has conducted an extensive study centered on throw-ins within the Premier League.
Barry reviewed over 60 hours of footage from the 2018-19 season and examined each of the 16,380 throw-ins that took place.
One key finding indicated that making lateral or backward throws can enhance the likelihood of a successful throw-in, compared to opting for forward throws.
