Mount Pleasant, the champions of the 2025 Concacaf Caribbean Cup, are preparing to make their debut in the Champions Cup against Galaxy at Dignity Health Sports Park located in California.

To prepare for this match, the Jamaican team has had to recruit several players from their academy.

"We aim to not just participate in the game, but to compete effectively; however, we lack the chances to perform at our best," stated Paul Christie, the sporting director of Mount Pleasant, in an interview with the Jamaica Observer.

The team comprises seven members from Haiti, an island nation in the Caribbean.

In June 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a partial travel ban on Haitian nationals.

However, there are exceptions for significant events such as the World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States this summer.

The Champions Cup, arranged by Concacaf, features teams from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. It remains uncertain whether there is any exemption specifically for this tournament.

Sport has reached out to both Concacaf and Mount Pleasant for their opinions on the matter.

These visa issues reveal a potential complication for Haiti during this summer's World Cup, which is being jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

This is the first time Haiti has qualified for the World Cup, and they will compete in a group alongside Morocco, Scotland, and Brazil.

While the United States claims that players will be granted exemptions from travel bans, there have been no assurances for fans.

In January, the U.S. State Department stated that a Fifa Pass appointment, which grants Fifa World Cup 2026 ticket holders prioritized visa interview opportunities in the U.S., does not permit entry to those who "would not otherwise qualify" for a visa.

The State Department’s guidance indicated that there are exceptions for "any athlete or member of an athletic team, including coaches, essential support personnel, and immediate family members."

Nonetheless, it clarified that "this exception does not extend to fans or spectators."

The United States will host 78 of the 104 matches of the World Cup across 11 cities, culminating with the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
