Ashvir Singh Johal has made history by being appointed as the manager of Morecambe, making him the first Sikh to assume the role at a professional British football club.

At just 30 years old, he also claims the title of the youngest manager across the top five divisions of English football.

The Panjab Warriors consortium took over the Shrimps on Sunday, bringing an end to a prolonged period of uncertainty for the National League side.

Johal steps in for Derek Adams, who was dismissed on Monday, despite having no prior experience managing a first-team squad. He has previously served under Kolo Toure at Wigan and assisted Cesc Fabregas while working with the youth team at the Italian club Como.

Earlier this summer, Johal achieved the distinction of being among the youngest coaches to earn his Uefa Pro Licence in English football history.

Before transitioning to senior football with Wigan in 2022, he dedicated a decade to various positions within Leicester City's academy.

In a June interview with the BBC, Johal expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to learn from remarkable individuals, especially mentioning Kolo and Cesc.

He stated, "I have a clear understanding of world-class expectations, how to lead with purpose, and how to cultivate a team with genuine character.

We are committed to fostering an environment that encourages people to excel, where everyone wants to participate and is motivated to improve daily."

Morecambe’s initial fixtures were postponed after the National League suspended their operations due to compliance issues with league regulations.

The team is set to face Altrincham on Saturday, which would mark their first competitive game since being relegated from League Two in May.

However, the BBC has reported that the club currently has only five players under contract, and as of Tuesday morning, they do not have insurance to train, raising the possibility of further postponement for that match.
