The 50-year-old has taken on the position temporarily to assist Sweden's struggling journey towards World Cup qualification.

Potter expressed, "I feel truly honored to take on this task, yet I am equally motivated. Sweden boasts incredible talent that performs in the top leagues globally every week."

"My responsibility will be to establish an environment where our team can perform at its peak to secure Sweden's place in the World Cup next summer."

Since the dismissal of Jon Dahl Tomasson following their 1-0 defeat to Kosovo on October 13, Sweden has been in search of a new head coach. This loss rendered automatic qualification from their group unattainable.

Nonetheless, they still have a chance to qualify for the play-offs, even if they do not secure a top-two finish in Group B, due to their strong performance in the 2024-25 Nations League, where they emerged as group winners.

Potter was let go by West Ham at the end of September after a lackluster start to the season.

With five losses in six matches during the 2025-26 campaign, the Hammers found themselves in the relegation zone of the Premier League. He managed only six victories out of 23 games since joining the east London side in January.

Despite this, Potter maintains a favorable reputation in Sweden, having achieved three promotions in four seasons at Ostersund, successfully moving the team from the fourth tier to the top league, and clinching a domestic cup in 2017.

He also had fruitful tenures at Brighton and Swansea City prior to his stint at Chelsea in 2022, where he was ultimately relieved of his duties after seven months.
